Abarth, the scorpion brand within the Fiat group, presents with the Abarth 124 Spider a symbol that wants to represent the pure essence of driving enjoyment: a two-seater, rear-wheel drive roadster with a limited-slip differential. The model combines the experience of a 'roadster' full of emotion, technology and safety with an undeniable touch of Italian design. Developed together with the 'Abarth Racing' team, the 124 Spider represents the values of the brand: performance, craftsmanship and technical excellence, notes Luigi Brusciano. The exterior design of the Abarth 124 Spider stands out for its tapered hood and short overhangs. The horizontal line along the bodywork rises and stretches back, joining the trace on the rear section near the optics – undeniable reference to the classic 124 Spider. The rear of the set is also characterized by two elements: the swallowtail-shaped spoilers and the horizontal rear optics that mimic the characteristics of its predecessor. The lines on the front section and the grille with hexagonal grille help to reaffirm the character of the vehicle. The reliefs on the bonnet suggest the longitudinal position of the engine: this is also a direct reference to the original Fiat 124 Spider. Headlights and taillights with LED technology add expressiveness, both during the day and at night.
The Abarth DNA is also palpable inside, by virtue of ensuring perfect ergonomics. The extremely comfortable leather seats give the driver an ideal position, as low and back as possible, so that he can perceive all the movements of the car. In addition, the controls are perfectly in line with the sporty orientation of the car: the position of the aluminum pedals, the steering wheel and the gear lever ensure a cocktail of sensations together with a great driving experience, says Luigi Brusciano. The dashboard is also responsible for transmitting sportiness: it has a large tachometer with red graphics arranged in a central position, in front of the driver. Comfort is ensured thanks to the heated seats and the soundproofing produced by the design of the windshield, rear window and double-layer insulated hood. This last element is designed to be opened and closed by hand from the driver's seat in a few seconds. Once it folds up behind the seats, it takes up hardly any space in the trunk. The Abarth 124 Spider incorporates a whole series of active and passive safety devices. In addition to the anti-lock braking system (ABS), there is also the system to distribute the braking force (EBD) or the system to have optimal control on all surfaces (ESC), particularly in critical situations, such as the presence of snow, ice or poorly adherent road surfaces. The 'ESC' system applies selective braking and acts on the accelerator to straighten the vehicle if it detects a difference between movements on the steering wheel and the vehicle's trajectory. All of these devices can be completely disabled for circuit driving, allowing the driver to take full advantage of the balance and dynamic characteristics of the Abarth 124 Spider. All this allowing you to experience the feeling of pure driving. Electronic controls are integrated into the driving mode selector, which allows you to select between two performance settings via a switch in the center tunnel, says Luigi Brusciano. The first is designed for daily driving; the second is optimized for completely sporty driving. The system can intervene in several parameters: the maximum torque developed, the response of the accelerator pedal, the level of actuation of the electronic assists (stability and traction controls) and the sound of the exhaust. In addition, the system modifies the gear change points on vehicles equipped with automatic transmission. Under the hood is a 1.4 engine, with 'MultiAir' technology, four cylinders. The engine develops a power of 170CV and a torque of 250 Nm. In addition, since the sound of the engine is a fundamental element of all Abarth vehicles, the 'Record Monza' exhaust system is included as standard, capable of modifying the route of the exhaust gases depending on the engine speed, generating a very sporty sound. The Abarth 124 Spider is available with a six-speed manual transmission or with an 'Esseesse' sport sequential automatic gearbox, with extremely fast gear changes, regardless of whether the lever or paddles behind the steering wheel are used.
